All vehicle keys will have a key number associated to them which refers to how many cuts they have and there depths. Vehicles leave the factory with a key number and this number will remain the same unless a lock change is fitted to the vehicle. We have access to the factory key numbers but if your vehicle has ever had a lock change it is essential to tell us before we carry out any work on your vehicle. These key numbers are essential when there is a complete loss of key situation as if there are no keys to copy from a key number must be available for new key blades to be cut. We can request the key number but that can take up to 24 hours. In most cases though we can decode the vehicles lock using special locksmith equipment giving us the key number and this can be done where ever the vehicle may be and on the same day. This is extremely use full as it will avoid having to get your vehicle recovered and having it of the road for several days while waiting for new keys from the dealer. There are 3 kinds of key types, Laser, Tibbe and Cylinder keys, all these keys will have key numbers associated with them.
Laser KeysLaser keys were introduced around 1998 and are most common on German vehicles. Most new cars nowadays will have a laser key profile lock. Despite there name they are not cut by a laser but instead milled out. All locks associated with laser keys can be picked and decoded for gaining entry and and new keys to be cut. Laser keys are always cut to code by the machine and are rarely done manually.

Tibbe KeysTibbe keys are found on Fords and Jaguars up to around 2007 depending on Make & Model. Tibbe locks differ from the Laser/Cylinder locks as they use a Tumbler system instead of a Wafer system. Complete loss of keys on these systems are resolved by either decoding the lock or stripping down the ignition barrel.

Cylinder keysCylinder keys are found on the majority of Asian and French vehicles and look similar to household keys. They work in the same way as a laser key but are cut on the outside edges instead of being milled out. There are dozens of different profiles (shapes) each relating to the vehicle make and model.
